the only tree of the Leguminous plants which is dioecious (male foot # female).
Origin: Canada.
Habitat: tolerates limestone.
Height: 35 m. Slow growth (5 m in 20 years).
Lifespan: 80 years.
Deciduous foliage. Huge leaves (60 - 100 cm long), paripinnate. Green above, grey-green, pubescent on the underside, yellow in autumn.
Small flowers, grouped in clusters, of colour greenish white, in June.
20 cm pods, appearing in October and remaining on the tree all winter long.
Use: the American pioneers roasted its seeds as some coffee ("Kentucky coffee").
